The Story Behind This Custom Build

On a recent visit to the Deering Banjos factory, we were in the showroom looking over the Goodtime lineup. We loved the vintage look of the bronze hardware on the baseline Goodtime, which was standing right next to an Artisan Goodtime Americana with standard nickel hardware. We asked about swapping the hardware to give the Artisan Americana that rich, vintage look players love. Our Deering representative, David Vega, suggested pairing it with a Fiberskin head and a No-Knot tailpiece to tie the whole visual and tonal aesthetic together.

The result is a stunning, vintage-inspired instrument with a deep, full voice. If you are looking for a warmer, rounder tone with plenty of bottom end, this custom setup is built for you. (If you prefer a brighter, punchier sound, we also offer the standard model with a frosted top head.)

Key Features & Tonal Upgrades

  • 12″ Violin-Grade Maple Rim: Delivers a stronger bass response and deeper warmth compared to standard 11″ rims.  This is perfect size for an all around sound for clawhammer style banjo.

  • Fretboard Scoop: Cut specifically for clawhammer and old-time players who want extra thumb clearance and that classic, plunky vintage voice over the neck.

  • Upgraded Bronze Hardware: Features the same high-end bronze hardware found on Vega Vintage Star banjos—offering top-tier visual character at half the price.

  • Fiberskin Head & No-Knot Tailpiece: Works in harmony with the 12″ rim to add warmth, smooth out high-end harshness, and provide a quick, focused attack.

  • 5th String Nut - A custom option not found on Goodtime Banjo Series.
  • Artisan Appointments: Finished in a rich brown stain with a Midnight Maple fingerboard, vintage Artisan-style inlays, planetary tuners, and pre-installed 5th-string capo spikes at frets 7, 9, and 10.
