This Custom Pisgah Possum was handmade by Pisgah Banjo Co. in Asheville, North Carolina. It starts with everything players love about the Possum, a 12" cherry rim with a persimmon tone ring. This creates such a wonderful and unique tone and added on top of this, is a banjo with low action that allows you to play for many hours. We took the foundation of this great banjo and made our Banjo Studio tweaks to give it an extra touch of class that will allow you to stand out among your peers and fellow musicians.
What Makes This Banjo Different
- Standard scale neck. Our regular Cherry Possums have had a short scale neck. The full standard scale puts more tension on the strings, which gives a bit more snap, volume and note clarity. It also gives you a little more room between the frets for your fingers.
- Slotted headstock. The open slots and side-mounted gold Gotoh tuners give the peghead a classic 19th-century look. The strings wrap over rollers inside the slots, so they pull straight back from the nut, which helps tuning stability and vibration transfer from the peghead.
- Hawktail tailpiece. This aged brass tailpiece is a traditional open-back design. It holds the strings with a firm, even down pressure on the bridge, which keeps notes clear and focused, and it looks right at home with the old-style hardware.
- JB Schall ball shoes. The ball-end bracket shoes are patterned after the hardware J.B. Schall used on his Chicago banjos in the late 1800s. Paired with Pisgah's aged brass frailing notch tension hoop, they give the pot a true vintage look up close.
The Sound
The persimmon tone ring is the heart of the Possum. It gives a warm, woody tone with a rich low end, without the bright ring of a metal tone ring. The 12" cherry rim adds depth and a round, plunky bass, and the longer standard scale adds punch and definition, so the notes come through clearly in a jam. The scooped fingerboard gives your strumming hand room to frail right over the end of the neck.
