What Makes Brooks Banjos Unique?

Brooks Masten has spent over 20 years perfecting the art of the open-back banjo. He doesn’t just assemble instruments; he coaxes distinct voices out of premium North American hardwoods and raw brass.

Custom, In-House Machined Hardware

Unlike many modern builders who rely on mass-produced components, Brooks machines his own vintage replica brass banjo parts right in his shop. From his signature "Spartan" butterfly shoes to custom brackets and traditional hooks, the hardware on a Brooks banjo is entirely unique to his brand.

Historical Inspiration Meets Modern Playability

Brooks draws heavy inspiration from late 19th and early 20th-century banjo pioneers. Whether it’s an 11-inch curly maple silverspun rim, a classic Dobson tone ring, a highly figured walnut neck, or a traditional paddle headstock, these instruments capture the soul and plucky resonance of the old-time tradition while offering modern structural stability and flawless intonation.

Why You’ll Want a Brooks Banjo in Your Collection

Unparalleled Tone and Responsiveness

Whether you are a seasoned clawhammer picker or an aspiring old-time musician, the tonal clarity of a Brooks banjo is unmistakable. They offer a rich, woody depth with a balanced high-end shimmer that cuts through a jam session without ever sounding harsh.

High-Quality Artwork

A Brooks banjo is as beautiful to look at as it is to play. From the elegant wood grain selections to the warm patina of his custom brass hardware, these are functional pieces of art built to endure for generations.

An Instrument with a Soul

When you pick up a Brooks banjo, you can feel the 20+ years of dedication built into the neck profile and the rim construction. It feels broken-in and comfortable from the very first strum, giving you an immediate connection to your music.  Most Brooks Banjos come with a real goat-skin head.  He takes the time to weather treat the head to reduce the stretching issues that come with a real skin head.  Along with making his own hardware, he also fashions the bridge out of tight-grain Douglas Fir.
